Description du produitExtraitART FOR LIFE Par Alan Govenar Il y a bien des années, lorsque Don Dretzke entra dans le studio Realistic Tattoo d'Ed Hardy à San Francisco et demanda qu'on lui tatoue tout le dos avec une image qu'il jugeait lui convenir parfaitement, ce fut à la fois un privilège et une responsabilité. Le fait n'était pas sans précédent. Il arrivait parfois qu'un client offre sa peau comme une toile en blanc et Hardy était en train de définir une nouvelle approche pour sa profession. Il connaissait Dretzke depuis pratiquement dix ans mais il n'avait jamais parlé d'un tatouage de cette taille. Après plusieurs conversations, Hardy décida au bout du compte de créer un tatouage avec un dragon, créature hybride et magique qui représente l'équilibre les forces positives et négatives de la vie. Pour Hardy, le dragon était l'image parfaite de la transformation, non seulement du corps de Dretzke, mais aussi pour les possibilités et le pouvoir du tatouage dans le monde contemporain. A ce niveau, alors qu'Hardy avait la vision d'une renaissance dans l'art du tatouage, il n'aurait jamais pu imaginer à quel point ses créations allait transcender la peau et se transposer dans le royaume de l'art et de la mode. Le fait de porter un dessin d'Ed Hardy est déjà une déclaration en soi, mais au-delà de la surface, l'image personnifie les dizaines années d'expérience qui ont mené à sa création. Enfant, Hardy était fasciné par les dragons qu'il voyait sur les souvenirs que son père envoyait du Japon. Il avait sept ans seulement et il annonça : «Les bêtes avec des cornes brodées sur les manches des vestes de soie et se tordant autour des tasses de thé laquées font vivre tout le lustre et les ombres de l'orient mystérieux.» Mais alors qu'il essayait de dessiner ces dragons, il était déconcerté. Il n'arrivait pas à «déchiffrer le code» et découvrir comment ils s'articulaient ensemble et comment ils étaient placés pour transmettre cette énergie ondoyante. Lorsque Hardy nota que le père de son meilleur ami avait des tatouages, il voulut en savoir plus. A l'âge de dix ans, Hardy voulait créer ses propres tatouages et il commença à les dessiner sur la peau des enfants du quartier avec du liner pour les sourcils et des crayons à encre. «Lorsque j'étais enfant», dit Hardy, «j'étais impressionné non seulement par les images et l'idée exaltante de marquer sa peau pour toujours, mais aussi les outils bizarres et primitifs nécessaires pour obtenir cet effet artistique. A un moment donné, j'ai collé avec du ruban adhésif noir des bobines de fils vides que j'avais pris dans le tiroir à couture de ma mère, sur des crayons de couleur pour donner l'apparence d'une vraie machine à tatouer.» Hardy avait repéré les salons de tatouage sur le Pike à Long Beach et toutes les fois qu'il en avait la possibilité, il allait voir travailler le tatoueur de la vieille école, Bert Grimm.
